Unlocking Understanding

SACE Accredited course: Practical strategies for non-language teachers to improve reading comprehension

Practical strategies for non-language teachers to improve reading comprehension.

Every teacher is a language teacher.

Reading comprehension forms the foundation of learning. However, according to the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) 2016, which assessed the reading comprehension skills of fourth-grade students in South Africa, approximately 78% of South African Grade 4 learners cannot read for understanding. This is something that needs to be addressed in all subjects and not just left to those who teach Home Language.

So what can we do about it?

In this course, we will provide you with research-based, practical strategies and techniques that you can use to enhance your learners’ reading comprehension abilities in all subjects. Best of all, you can start them in any classroom from tomorrow. There is no need for a major classroom practice overhaul!

Without reading and understanding there is nothing that can be done because every learning area evolves around those.

I was in particular interested about the '' stop, drop, and read'' I think it is a great approach to helping learners develop such positive attitude towards reading. I can already picture it in my head with the whole school participating and actually adopting it as a culture.

Not forcing learners to read.

As a teacher we are always calling on learners to read aloud in class without asking them if they would like to. What Jenna said about learners being nervous about being called on and not focusing on what is being read, resonated with me. From now on I will ask who would like to read instead of just choosing learners randomly to read.

Very helpful.

I really appreciated this course and even though it is more focused on grade 4 upwards, there are a few pointers I could use in the lower grades to prepare them for the future.

New teaching methods

I have identified several new teaching methods that I think I could apply towards helping my learners. For example, the methods in "Associate reading with fun" encourages students to read which will be beneficial towards improving their recognition of words.
