As 2020 approaches it’s time to reflect on the past year and see where we can improve in the new year. New year, new me, right?
Create a flexible classroom
Have you heard of flexible classrooms? These classes have different seating options which allows children to find a place in the class where they work best. For example, extroverted children can choose to work at grouped desks, while shy children can choose a quiet corner for themselves.
You can rearrange your current seating plan and introduce other flexible classroom options such as standing desks and bean bags (if you can get permission and funding).
Evaluate your teaching style
Every teacher has their own method of teaching and what works for some may not work for others. Before we enter the new year, examine your current teaching style and ask yourself some questions. Is your current teaching style effective? Is there something you’ve always wanted to try? Do you want to be a gentle guide or a strong leader for your students? Asking questions like these will help you reflect on your teaching style.
Improve time management
There are never enough hours in the day for teachers! Improving your time management will relieve you of stress and pressure, and open up some brain space for what matters. Learn how to prioritise tasks, stick to deadlines, and be realistic about how long a task will take you.
Leave work at work
This may seem like a radical idea but try to leave your work at school. Teachers are people too, and need to relax and spend time with family as well. If you feel like you really need more time to get things done, try arriving at school half an hour early and leaving half an hour late. It’s amazing what you can accomplish in an hour! This way, you get to keep school and home separate.
Spice up lesson plans
Change up your lessons to reignite the classroom spark. Switching things up will be a great step away from routine for you, and interesting for your students. If you usually lecture from the text book, have your kids take turns reading paragraphs aloud to the rest of the class. This will keep them engaged and focused.
Find that well of patience
This new year, try not to let others frustrate you so easily. There will always be disruptive students, difficult parents and unfriendly colleagues. Take a deep breath and handle the situation with grace. Learning to let things go will also improve your mental and emotional health.
Put yourself first
Teachers are always putting the needs of others before their own needs. Make 2020 all about you for a change! We’re talking about small habits that will make a big difference in your life, like learning how to say no, and actually taking a proper lunch break. Make time for a healthy diet, regular exercise, and hobbies that you enjoy outside of school.
Remember your passion for teaching
The idea of a fresh start can help you remember why you started teaching in the first place. It’s easy to forget what motivated you to teach in the first place, especially if you’ve been teaching for many years. The new year is the perfect time to ignite your passion for teaching again.
Happy New Year, teachers! We’ll see you in 2020!
